On New Years day rather than staying home and watching more Only Fools and Horses reruns we instead headed into London to meet the AQHA UK riders who were taking part in the New Years Day parade. We walked from Oxford Circus down to Green Park where they were getting ready. On the way every side street had participants of the parade getting reading, steel bands, dancers, mini steam engines, marching bands and giant inflatables. The noises were loud and varied, not conditions I would like to ride in!
We found Fiona, Mary and Lindsay tacked up and waiting to get going at Green Park, from there we followed the parade though Piccadilly, then along Regent Street towards Big Ben and the Houses of Parliment.
The streets were packed with people sitting/standing on walls and windowsills to get a good view.
At at the end of the parade, which finished just past the houses of Parliment, we walked along with Fiona, Mary and Lindsay. At this point there are no gates between the crowds and the riders and they are just riding along with pedestrians towards Buckingham Palace.
Wherever this team rode they got lots of attention, these horses are appearing in a lot of selfies.
We have more coverage of the parade coming up in the January issue of Western Horse UK.
